Plant formThe elderberry is a deciduous shrub or small tree that typically grows to between 2 and 4 meters in height. It has gray-brown branches that are heavily branched and strongly ribbed longitudinally, with a well-developed central pith. Its leaves are arranged oppositely on the branches, are odd-pinnate compound in shape, and typically feature between 7 and 9 leaflets. These leaflets are long oval to ovate-lanceolate in shape, measuring between 4 and 11 cm in length and 2 to 4 cm in width. The tips of the leaflets are long and pointed, while the base is broad and obliquely wedge-shaped. The margin of the leaflets is sawtoothed and both sides of the leaves are hairless. When crushed, the leaves emit a distinctive odor. The shrub also produces oval-shaped panicles of white to yellowish-white flowers, each with a bell-shaped calyx made up of 5 sepals. The fruit of the elderberry is a spherical drupe that is black-purple or red in color and contains between 3 and 5 nuclei.
