Description
Technical Parameters
Calendula, also known as Calendula officinalis L., is a biennial plant that sports a hairy exterior. Its leaves grow in an alternate oval pattern, while its flowers bloom in shades of vivid yellow and orange. The flowering season for Calendula spans from April to September, during which its fruits mature into fleshy delights from June to October. This plant tends to thrive in mild to cold climates, displaying impressive heat and cold resistance. Its natural habitat or homeland was Southern Europe's Mediterranean coastline.
The calendula plant is a rich source of vitamins, particularly vitamin A and C, which are highly beneficial to the skin. Its cosmetic properties are attributed to the presence of carotenoids, butterfly flavonoids, and other essential nutrients. Interestingly, all parts of the calendula plant are edible, and are widely used in different cultures for their medicinal properties. The roots contain bitter substances and aristotle diol, while the seeds contain glycerides and other vital compounds. The petals are commonly used in shampoos and other hair care products to lighten hair color. In ancient times, calendula was considered a sacred flower in India, while the Egyptians believed it had anti-aging properties. During the Middle Ages, marigolds were used extensively for healing and to combat the plague and black death.
