Epimedium, commonly known as horny goat weed, bishop's hat, or fairy wings, belongs to the Berberidaceae family, which is also referred to as the barberry family. This flowering plant genus consists of more than 60 species, and around 15 of them are utilized in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Among these species, Epimedium grandiflorum holds significant recognition.
Epimedium grandiflorum, a herbaceous perennial found in Eastern Asia, is characterized by its red stems and heart-shaped leaves. Growing up to one foot tall, this plant showcases a copper tinge on its foliage that gradually diminishes as it matures. The enchanting Epimedium displays a vibrant assortment of colors when in bloom, ranging from purple and pink to yellow and white. Notably, its shoots originate from rhizomes, albeit their growth patterns can significantly vary.
