WHAT ARE MONK FRUIT SWEETENERS?
Monk fruit, also known as lo han guo or Swingle fruit (Siraitia grosvenorii), is a fruit native to southern China. This small round fruit has a long history of use in Eastern medicine as a remedy for colds and digestive issues. Today, it is gaining popularity as a natural sweetener for foods and drinks. The process of creating monk fruit sweeteners involves extracting the juice by crushing the fruit after removing its seeds and skin. The resulting fruit extract or juice contains no calories per serving. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) permits the use of monk fruit sweeteners in various food and beverage products.
ARE MONK FRUIT SWEETENERS SAFE TO CONSUME?
YES. Monk fruit sweeteners have been permitted as generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDAsince 2010, a category which requires expert consensus that a food ingredient is safe for its intended use. Governments in Australia and New Zealand, China, Japan and Canada (tabletop packets only; not approved for use in foods and beverages) have also concluded that monk fruit sweeteners are safe for the general population, including children, people with diabetes, and women who are pregnant or nursing. An acceptable daily intake (ADI) has not been established for monk fruit sweeteners because adverse effects have not been demonstrated, even after high amounts of monk fruit sweeteners were given in animal studies. The ADI typically represents an amount 100 times less than the quantity of a substance found to be safe in research studies.
Using monk fruit sweeteners as a substitute for traditional sweeteners can potentially aid in weight loss or weight maintenance.
There has been no research conducted on the effects of monk fruit sweeteners on weight. However, existing evidence strongly suggests that substituting sugary foods and drinks with low-calorie sweeteners can contribute to weight loss and management. The National Weight Control Registry conducted a comprehensive survey, involving individuals who have successfully maintained weight loss. Interestingly, more than half of the respondents reported regular consumption of low-calorie beverages. Moreover, a significant 78 percent of these individuals believed that such beverages aided in controlling their overall calorie intake.
